What Robert Malone did was to develop a method to get RNA into cells. This is useful because if you synthesize or extract RNA that instructs a cell to make a certain kind of protein, you can add that RNA to cells that don’t normally make the protein and they’ll start to make it. They don’t make it permanently, only as long as the added RNA is around, which is not very long. We were a long way from any clinical application in humans, and when we finally got there, it was not Dr. Malone who did it. 15 years later Katalin Karikó figured out how to modify RNA to make it last long enough in the cell to be useful as a therapeutic. 5 years after that, Derrick Rossi adapted the technique to work on stem cells. He, Timothy Springer, and Robert Langer would go on to found Moderna, which licensed Dr. Karikó’s patent William Gunn, PhD in Biomedical Science awarded 2008 This was very important work for the field and helped the progress of biomedical science immensely. He is now claiming he invented DNA and RNA vaccines, but this claim is overexaggerated. His work was foundational, but that doesn’t mean he did the necessary engineering of the technology to optimize it for use in humans. Many other people made important contributions to the field, including optimizing the lipids used in the vaccines for stability and modifying the delivered mRNA so it would last hours rather than minutes in vivo.
