The Promise
'I'm going to swim across the river, "jim answered.
''No, jim!" Tania said. "Don't do it.'"
F rom the boat, Howard Crawford saw the golden seal in
the ocean near the island. The seal was very fat.
She's going to have pups, he thought. She wants to find a
quiet place on the island, away from bears and men with guns.
But I'm going to catch her! I want the money for her fur!

He went after her in his small boat. But the golden seal
moved quickly and his boat was slow. Suddenly, the sky went
very dark.
"There's going to be a storm," a man on the big boat,
behind him, said. "Come back!"
But Crawford didn't listen. He wanted to catch the golden
seal. Suddenly, there was a strong wind and Crawford fell into
the water. But he was a strong swimmer. He managed to swim
to the beach.
The storm was very bad now and Crawford was frightened.
